5 Reasons to Buy Grass-Fed Beef in the UK

In this article we’ll look at the 5 most important reasons to buy grass-fed beef in the UK.

There are many benefits to choosing Organic Grass-Fed British Meat.

First, however, we’re going to explain exactly what grass-fed means, and how it differs from the standard beef you’ll find in the supermarket or local butchers.

Most cows are fed grain

What’s all the fuss about grass-fed beef? Don’t all cows eat grass anyway?

One would think so, but sadly, often this is not the case.

In the mid 20th century farmers realised that cows could be fattened in a fraction of the time if they were enclosed in feed lots, and given a calorie dense diet of wheat, barley, corn and soy.

This produced lots of cheap beef for consumers, and fatter profit margins for the farms.

Unfortunately it also resulted in much more animal suffering, higher land and water use, higher pesticide and fertilizer use, and a much larger carbon footprint.

Beef has got a bad rap

This inhumane and unsustainable method of producing beef has given red meat a bad reputation.

Not all beef is created equal, however, and it is unfair to tarnish all beef with the same brush.

Here are the top 5 reasons why you should buy grass-fed beef in the UK:

There are a great many reasons to choose grassfed beef if you live in Britain, but we’ve whittled it down to our top 5:

  1. Animal Welfare

Our organic grass fed beef comes from cows that are free to roam across the lush hills of Pendle, grazing and chewing the cud to their ox heart’s content.

It takes our cows twice the time to reach full weight, but we think it’s well worth the wait.
  2. Biodiversity

Grassland is like a very tiny jungle – look closely and you’ll see many species of grasses, clovers, flowers, and plants. These are a habitat to 1000s of insects, rodents, reptiles and small mammals, all of which in turn are food for larger predators and birds.
  3. Sustainability

The production of animal feed takes a huge toll on wildlife and the environment via deforestation, soil erosion, and the run-off of pesticides and chemical fertilisers.

None of these problems occur with grass-fed beef. The grass grows without the need of pesticides, chemical fertilisers or irrigation on land that couldn’t otherwise be farmed.
  4. Carbon Footprint

Without the carbon costs of feed production and transportation of industrial beef, grass-fed beef is a very low impact product.

The manure from our cows is sequestered back into the soil, part of a carbon cycle that has worked in harmony with nature for millions of years – ruminants are part of the solution, not the problem!
  5. Nutrition

Cows take indigestible plant matter and pass it through 4 highly specialised stomachs to turn it into delicious, nutrient dense meat.

This meat is easily digested by humans, and rich in not just protein, but also vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats.
